Cezanne is considered to be one of the forerunners of the Cubist movement and this tactile picture is a good introduction to Cubism, as the features of the painting are recognisable by touch, not being a purely visual concept where the need to use visual experience in order to imagine the scene could be required. The two men locked in battle over a game of cards are thought to represent the mental struggle between Cezanne and his father.
