The Fifer Boy
by Edward Manet (1866)

This is a simple picture of a young boy dressed in a military uniform and playing a flute. It has no background detail and care has been taken to define his left arm crossing his body and also the flute against the lower part of his face. For someone without sight, careful touch will reveal a boy soldier of mid-nineteenth century, so often seen in history books.
